South Gate, CA
At A Glance

With a total land area of more than 7.4 square miles, this city is sprawling with residential, commercial, and industrial development areas, making it the 73rd largest city in California and the 17th largest in Los Angeles County.

The City of South Gate is known for its outstanding city government services, well-designed parks and recreational facilities, and its overall family-friendly environment.

A Brief History

The South Gate area was initially inhabited by the Tongva Indians before the area was developed by Spanish ranchers. Among the early Spanish settlers were the Lugos, one of California’s first families.

Francisco Lugo served as a soldier at Mission San Antonio de Padua near Salinas, California, His son Antonio Maria Lugo would also become a Spanish soldier and later settled on land that would encompass the present-day City of South Gate.

By 1880, agriculture had become the area’s most important economic activity. Then between 1910 and 1940, most of the agricultural land began being used for residential development and industrial purposes.

The city was officially named in 1918 after the South Gate Gardens on the Cudahy Ranch. Five years later, on January 20, 1923, the city was incorporated using the shortened form of its name.

By September 2023, the median price of a home sold was $625,000. In a little under 3 years, the typical homebuyer would have seen their South Gate investment grow by over 22%.

While this may not sound like a meteoric rise, it is a considerable return on investment. Dining in

    South Gate

    1. Birrieria Esquivel

If you love Mexican food, you almost certainly want to visit Birrieria Esquivel. There’s nothing particularly fancy about this place, and it certainly is not fine dining. However, what makes it worth going out of your way to visit is the great food at very reasonable prices.

    2. Bestia

If you want to make more of your dining experience, try Bestia, a warehouse that has been converted into an extraordinary quality restaurant. While the setting is powerfully evocative it’s the food that will really excite. Heavily influenced by Italian cuisine the food is rich, flavorful, and prepared with an obvious respect for the ingredients.

    3. Buena Mesa

If you are looking for seafood, Buena Mesa has a wonderful menu that has not only fish but also octopus, scallops, and shrimp.
